Learning a foreign language is never an easy task. One has to get accustomed to the script, the pronunciation, grammar and the culture that the language represents. Only then can one be said to be fluent in all aspects of the language. The Chinese language is perceived to be the language of the future. The Chinese economy has made great strides and an ever increasing number of countries have long term trade relations with China.

Language with long term prospects
In this situation knowledge of the Chinese language is considered to be an added advantage with respect to one’s career. However it takes a considerable amount of time and effort to learn a new language especially for adults who are accustomed to conversing and thinking in their native language. Kids however pick up a new language faster; they are more adept at recognizing characters in different scripts as also the pronunciation.

Kids can learn the Chinese language which has a complicated relation between the pronunciations of characters and the written form, at a much faster rate as compared to adults. Several institutes have come forward offering Chinese language training in the recent past. Online schools have provided a viable alternative for kids who find online studying more effective as compared to conventional methods.

Learning Methods
The methods used to learn Chinese are the age old reliable ones which are more refined by modern technological innovations. The courses are generally designed according to the age group of the kids starting from preschool to high school grade. The courses are structured in a progressive format starting from Beginner and Elementary level followed by an Intermediate level and then Advanced level.

The courses should ideally be taught by a native Chinese speaker who has a degree from a reputed University for teaching Chinese as a second language. Learning Chinese by way of the classroom method is feasible to a certain degree; however the method often becomes mechanical with little room for innovation or making the lessons interesting and interactive for kids.

Also it is practically not possible to conduct one on one session with kids in a classroom style teaching method as students often have specific areas of improvement that need to be addressed on an individual basis. Kids who may be good at writing could need encouragement in conversing while those good at speaking may be lacking in grammar.

Learning made easy

All these concerns can be addressed to a certain degree if kids learn the Chinese language complemented by the online methods. Headsets, webcams, interactive whiteboards, CDs, video and sound clips all can contribute to making learning a fun filled experience for kids.

The various features in the Chinese language like the pronunciation independent from the characters, the characters varying with ideas and phonetics, resembling at times a pictorial script requires extensive practice a feature which is best accomplished online. Kids can learn Chinese with one on one session involving simulated techniques like role playing and conversations combining the practical with theory and giving a chance to immediately bring into use what one has learnt.

Every child should have a solid science education regardless of whether they want to be the next Albert Einstein or Michael Jordan. Science is all around us, it is everywhere, effecting everything that we do. The “we” in that last statement includes children. Children that understand how science plays a role in our everyday lives have a wonderful foundation for success in life. This is what it means to give them a good educational science foundation for life.

In today’s world the idea that the only people that need to understand science are those that will work as scientists and engineers is seriously outdated. Making sure that all children have a good science education is vital to each child being a success regardless of their background, talent or abilities. Children need to be able to make sense of the world around them, so that they can make the best decisions possible in relation to what they want to do in life, or with life for that matter.

Teaching Children with Toys!

Children can learn science at any age really. The earlier they start the better. The best way for kids to learn is through play and repetition. There are wonderful science toys for preschool science activities. Babies learn cause and effect, they are hungry the cry. They are wet they cry. They are learning that you respond to what they need if they cry. That is science is a very simplistic form. Wooden blocks or architect blocks are wonderful for teaching balance and stacking and lessons in gravity. Baby crawl mats are also wonderful teaching toys that are a lot of fun for babies.

With play being the best way kids learn, it only makes sense then to introduce toys to them that encourage understanding science. Children love to use their imagination to have fun and to help them figure out the world around them. So play is a wonderful time to be introducing science to them. Think of the games that we used to play; Don’t Spill the Beans, Don’t Break the Ice, the Telephone Game, Lincoln logs, patty cake, each of these games has a science behind it. Each of these games are wonderful science games or toys for the pre K school age group.

Another popular toy is the Block N Roll, which is a construction block system with hundreds of possibilities, such as building a space ship that a child can sit in, to constructing the tallest tower that they have ever seen. There are also “board games” that teach science are fun for the family, such as Aggravation or Chinese Checkers.

Children are by nature curious as they feel out the world, trying to makes sense of what is around them. Science feeds that curiosity hunger that they have. It is a hunger that needs to be encouraged and satisfied the best that it can be. Finding these toys is not as hard as one would think. To make sure that you get good quality toys, visit science toy shops online. These are the best places to find unique science toys such as 3-D space projectors, or Hydro Greenhouses.

First things first: Which Chinese to Learn?

Mandarin is the official language of China and Taiwan. It is the dialect of the majority in Mainland China and the Chinese overseas. Cantonese is not as commonly used since Britain’s turnover of Hong Kong to China. It may become a dialect that is used among family and friends.or business purposes, Mandarin is more practical to learn.

Learning Chinese at Home

A great way to start your children in learning the Chinese Language is through Learn Chinese DVDs and videos and audio CDs. These DVDs are specially designed to optimally expose your child to the tones of Chinese with fun things to watch. The learning pace in DVDs are carefully programmed to help your child remember the words and phrases. Chinese songs on CDs on the other hand, are great to use while travelling or during your child’s relaxation time. For bigger children, Chinese stories on CDs can be played to expose them further to more Chinese vocabulary and sentence construction.

If one parent speaks Chinese, arrangements can be made that 1 parent will speak to the children in Chinese and the other will speak to them in English. Kids have an amazing ability to keep up with each parent’s language.

Exposing Children to Native Chinese Speakers

o Chinese tutors are available to teach children and even the entire family to speak Chinese. Check online or newspaper ads for available tutors.
o Play dates with children who are learning or already know Chinese is a fantastic way to expose your kids.
o Another option is to hire Chinese-speaking baby sitters. Local universities often have students who are half-Chinese or spouses of Chinese. This can be an option you can try.
o Other families get au pairs from China.
o Some families hire Chinese nannies to ensure the children grow up hearing the native Chinese tones. Be careful in the hiring though. Truth to be told, there is a large number of people in the US from China who don’t have the necessary papers but are working as nannies. Nannies also take care of your children, so picking the right person is extremely important, especially if they live with you. Friends of ours have gone through multiple nannies and it was not a good experience.

Learning Chinese Online

There are online Chinese programs available for adult English speakers. So far, I am not aware if there are any online programs available for English speaking children.

Chinese Private Schools

Traditionally, non-public Chinese schools teach a child the Chinese language when the child is old enough to sit still and copy characters. Most schools still use the method of rote teaching used in China and Taiwan. Children in the US are very independent, therefore the rote method may not be the best way for children to learn the words and characters. Instead, the Montessori or ESL method may be used to interest the kids to learn Chinese. These methods place emphasis on using Chinese in conversation . Other programs that teach using a lot of singing and other fun activities will definitely make children learn Chinese easier.

Summer Camps

Chinese summer camps expose the child to full immersion of the Chinese language. Summer camps may be a weekend trip in the US, a full boarding school stay, or traveling to live for several weeks to China or Taiwan. There are few sites that produce the largest list of Chinese summer camps available so stay tuned for updates.

Learn Chinese Materials

There are a lot of products available in the market to help children learn Chinese. Books, videos, audio CDs/ cassettes and software can be used at home to learn Chinese. These materials not only expose the child to vocabulary or tones, but also show the beauty of Chinese culture. These materials can also be used for parents and children to spend time together.

Books

A big challenge to teaching Chinese from books is that one parent/ adult should know how to read it. For families who are starting to learn from scratch together, bi-lingual books are a big help. Story books that can be read along with audio CDs are useful to learn the proper pronunciation. A great introductory book to reading and writing Chinese characters is Long is the Dragon. For smaller children, I Won’t Bite is a very interesting material. Kids will be able to touch and feel the different types of animal skin textures.

Videos

Videos teach through engaging visuals, songs, and repetitive vocabulary. Viewers will also be exposed to how different places and persons look like. In 1 DVD of the Follow Jade series, Teacher Jade goes to a Chinese Kindergarten. Children will be able to compare how their own school and classmates look like. The Bao Bei series has 5 enjoyable videos that teach Chinese vocabulary of a lot of common words. Bao Bei is a panda puppet that children will like to study Chinese words.

Audio CDs

Chinese CDs can be grouped into 2:
o 100% Chinese songs and stories. Some do not have printed guides, others include a book/ booklet
o Learn-Chinese CDs specifically designed for those learning Chinese as a second language. These CDs usually include books, booklets with Chinese, English and Pinyin. Songs are sung in both Chinese and English, or booklets show the English translations. For example, the songs in Teach Me Chinese Book and CD are popular and sung in both English and Chinese. Parents can also learn songs to sing for their children, such as Happy Birthday. This series also comes with a Teacher Guide. Other Learn Chinese Book and CD series such as Sing and Learn Chinese Series and Let’s Sing Chinese also engages its listeners with interesting songs.

When you are trying to learn Chinese, many people will tell you to find the free courses which are available on the internet. You can definitely find these free courses online. But would they help?

The most important thing in today’s fast moving world is time. No one can afford to waste time on things without getting any results. The free things are not great when it comes to the results. The same stays true for the online free Chinese lesson. Remember that the things which are for free do not have the exceptional interest of the designer and that means that you will not be getting the best thing. You will have to find a paid Chinese lesson in order to learn quickly and effectively.

The courses which are offered for free are not always good. The giveaways are generally with an intention. The person giving you the free thing would be planning to get you hooked to it. Once you are hooked and you find it a little interesting, you will be bombarded with the paid options and offers. This normally is not the best option and a lot of time is wasted by the people looking for free lessons.

If you are someone who knows nothing about Chinese language and want to start from scrap, then the free courses will not be of any help. The best way to learn the Chinese language is with the help of the multimedia material and the free courses will never give you that. This will make it hard for you to learn the Chinese language and you will end up wasting a lot of time and getting frustrated. Many of the learners quit learning just because of this.

The best thing is to find the lessons which are complete in all the respects. The Chinese learning courses and the software programs which have multimedia presentations will be great for quick and easy learning. You will also have to see whether there are any hidden costs in the course and the program which you are choosing or not. In order to avoid these problems, you should start by reading the reviews about the programs and the courses. You can also read the testimonials which other users have left. This will help you to know the things better. You will be in a better position to decide about the right course and the right program to learn Chinese and take Chinese lesson.

Remember that Chinese is not an easy language and you will have to show commitment and dedication while learning the Chinese. A learner without these, will never be able to learn the Chinese language. You will also have to make sure that you are ready to work hard. You should also have spare time which you can devote to Chinese learning. Apart from these things, you will need to have a clear cut aim and strategy when learning the Chinese language. Without a strategy, you will end up wasting too much time for too little achievement.

Nothing beats getting a complete grasp of something than getting up close and personal. The same can be said in learning a language. The best thing is to experience first-hand how it is in the place where a language is natively spoken or written. To completely learn Chinese, the ideal is to book a semester language course in China or other countries where the language is being used.

Of course, if you have the time and budget, then go for it. However, for those whose time and money do not suffice, the next best option is to check out Chinese lessons online. What are the advantages of learning Chinese via the internet? Here is a rundown of reasons. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to start your first Chinese words without busting your savings or leaving your area.

1. It is convenient. They say there is no place like home. If there is an option to take Chinese lessons right at your very room, wouldn’t you choose that over jet setting hundreds of miles away? All you need is your computer, an internet connection, a comfortable chair, and a good headset. With a few clicks on your mouse, you’ll be able to choose from thousands of websites that offer the type of Chinese lessons that you need-beginner, intermediate, advanced grammar, calligraphy, and others.

2. You can study at your own pace. Being enrolled in a typical language class has its pros and cons. One of the pros is the opportunity to practice what you’ve learned with your classmates. One of the cons is the pressure to keep up with the rest of the group. If you are the shy type or the one who takes some time to process lessons, then it is better to study without the pressure. In online Chinese tutorial, you can review a lesson repeatedly at your own comfortable pacing.

3. You control your time. If you study best early in the morning, you may do so without bugging anyone. If you want to do additional reading, you may definitely do so even late at night. Online Chinese lessons offer flexibility to suit your own schedule. The lessons are there all the time, any day, ready for access when needed. Live tutors are also available to answer your questions or for clarifications.

4. You have a lot of options. When you enroll in a class, you cannot really choose the instructor. And if you are bored with the usual curriculum, you cannot just skip to other lessons or change how the module is being taught. Online Chinese lessons are presented in various ways. There are video tutorials, audio tutorials, text tutorials, and an interactive lesson. Many sites offer free trial of their services so you may check out if their teaching style suits you.

5. It is cheaper. There is not much explaining needed. Many online Chinese lessons come for free! There are even free translations-written and spoken Chinese-to many other languages.

China is one of the cradles of ancient civilization. Its history reverberates even in the present times; its language is spoken by the majority of the world. Nowadays, almost everything is made from China. Being dubbed as the next economic superpower, business is indeed flourishing in the said country. China has etched itself several milestones in businesses, research, sciences, and arts. It is but logical to think about learning the Chinese language as it may be the universal language in the future. With all the marvels to behold, who wouldn’t want to have the opportunity to visit the land of dragons and emperors?

In the modern age of globalization, China has opened it doors to other countries, not only in Asia but also to the Western world. It’s a good thing they offer scholarships to foreign individuals in their reputable universities. If you are very eager to learn Chinese, it is a nice idea to spend some time in the country and enroll in open courses as an exchange student. If you do not intend to stay as long but would want to be fluent in Chinese, search for short-courses on Chinese lessons with just a few clicks of your mouse.

The best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in the culture where it originated from. Think of it as a lasting impression with actual relevance in your objective of learning the language. The usual study module includes not only daily Chinese lessons in script and speech, but also visits to historical sites such as visits to temples, Great Wall of China, and even the Forbidden City. Aside from these field trips, you also get to taste authentic Chinese cuisine. As they say, what better way is there to learn a language than to be one with the locals?

Online audio tutorials are available on the net but it lacks the holistic experience of learning Chinese. Sometimes, the online audios are pronounced very slowly, which may be good for beginners, but confusing later when used in actual practice. Simply put, the ones in these websites are not very good examples of how real Chinese conversations go about. Mingling with the locals, talking to native Chinese tutors, and a good cultural overview make a learning trip to China worth your while.

The beauty of the Chinese language lies in its complexity and tonality. It’s not enough that you know the word; it matters how you pronounce it as well. Exercise what you’ve learned by going to the market and see if the grocer understands you. Eat at restaurant downtown and try to read your order from the menu. While in China, go and savor every thing that is perceived by your senses. Listen. Look. Experience. Enjoy. Studying Chinese may very well be one of the toughest in the world but if your lessons are as enjoyable as a trip to China, it will be one heck of a learning experience you’ll never regret.

How do you go about learning the language being spoken for over a thousand years by people who make up a big fraction of the world’s population? Knowing a second language confers an advantage especially when it is Chinese, the most widely spoken in the globe. According to some sources, Chinese is one of the hardest languages to master. However, this preconceived notion should not deter you from studying a very useful tool. There are several approaches in learning Chinese. This is not limited to memorizing random words or phrases and just saying them out loud. Below are some very helpful tips for studying Chinese.

1. Have the proper attitude. Mastery takes some effort and practice. Have an open mind and optimistic outlook when learning Chinese. For native English speakers, it may indeed come as a challenge; but a consistent and diligent student will have no problem speaking the language. Patience is a virtue in this case. Setting aside a few minutes a day for a language lesson, be it on your own or with a tutor, is ideal.

2. Listen. As one of the Chinese proverbs say, “To listen well, is as powerful a means of influence as to talk well, and is as essential to all true conversation.” Before you even try conversing in Mandarin, familiarize yourself with how the letters, syllables, and words are being spoken. There are four basic tones in Mandarin Chinese-rising, falling, flat, and falling-rising tones. The meaning of a word may depend on the tone used. With audio tutorials, take an extra effort in understanding Chinese phonemes.

3. Look. It may be overwhelming at first glance but when learning how to speak Chinese, you might as well be familiar with Pinyin. As the official system, Pinyin is used to translate Chinese characters to Roman alphabet. If this intimidates you, start with reading a Chinese text with equivalent transcription in Roman alphabet. Accompany the reading with audio tutorial to learn how to pronounce a given word.

4. Explore. There may be language schools present in your neighborhood. Chinese lessons are being offered in many parts of the world. Enroll yourself in short courses and see if you can readily pick up on the lessons. Why not schedule a trip to a local Chinatown? You may practice what you’ve learned and gauge your progress in speaking Chinese. Think of ways to make your Chinese lessons more interesting. Try reading a Chinese menu out loud and ask the waiter if you have said it correctly.

5. Go for more. To enrich your vocabulary, strive to memorize at least 10 new words a day. If you are up for grammar lessons, sign-up for advanced classes. You may have a Chinese instructor assess your language level so you’ll know what class fits you. There are also several Chinese learning software available for download in online tutorial sites. And if you are looking for a greater challenge, take your next vacation in China.
